Shanghaied (2006)

Paul Curran and Allan Cowell

I was in Shanghai a couple of years ago and I saw this pair playing in the fantastic and now legendary Blarney Stone Irish pub. At the time they were also supported by a broad and handsome Highland fiddle player. When I got back to Dunoon I wanted to know more. I looked them up on Ross Records, a small but helpful distribution company based in Aberdeen, and I found this album. From the very first chord this record issues debauchery like free tickets to an exclusive nightclub . The powerful guitar is a base for Curran's odes to whisky, women and sailing. Cowell provides some lovely versions of border ballads, that make the hair stand on your arms, neck and back! Come on folks, if you want good honest and unpretentious versions of Scots and Irish drinking, fighting, and love songs, this is the album to go for. Every track has been arranged, performed and produced to a high level, and the atmosphere really does leave you feeling Shanghaied! - Amazon Review
